A preventive examination can save your life!

The Melanoma Day focuses on the prevention and detection of malignant melanoma which represents a very dangerous type of skin cancer. This type of cancer originates in the melanocyte skin cells which are responsible for producing skin pigments. Melanomas can occur anywhere on the surface on the skin as a result of past sunburns during childhood, excessive sunbathing throughout one’s life as well as insufficient protection of the skin against sun rays.

This malignant disease is on the rise in the Czech Republic and affects an increasing number of young people. Prevention is crucial because melanoma is known to metastasize to other organs quite early on. Examination of birthmarks and moles by a dermatologist takes a mere 20 minutes and can actually save your life. Skin cancer which is detected early enough can be treated well by means of surgical removal.

For more information, please refer to the article titled Why Check Birthmarks?

The “Euro Melanoma Day” is organized by a group of European dermatologists falling under the Melanoma Task Force, which is run under the auspices of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology.  In the Czech Republic, the Czech Dermatological Society ČLS JEP and the Czech Academy of Dermatology and Venerology was responsible for the organization of the event.  The goal of the project is to increase public awareness with regards to the dangers of birthmarks and exposure to sunrays. Further the project aims to stress the importance and role of dermatologists in diagnosing and treating skin tumors as well as gathering as much statistical data as possible. More information is available on: www.euromelanoma.org/czech/.
